MAYOR & POLICE CHIEF REACT TO SHOOTING AT PROBLEM BAR
(10/13/2007) NEW HAVEN- At 3:05 this morning 24-year-old William Holly was shot as he was exiting the Taurus Café located at 520 Winchester Avenue. Holly, who received a gunshot wound to the right shoulder, was treated at the Hospital of St. Raphael’s and discharged this morning.
Larry Livingston, owner of the Taurus Café, was served with a zoning cease and desist order by the City in August for operating an after-hours establishment without the proper permits. However, Livingston has continued to open and operate the Taurus despite the order, the reason for which he was arrested on Friday, October 5. “I am furious and outraged,” said Police Chief Francisco Ortiz, “The Taurus presents a continuous problem where the owner refuses to cooperate and has a blatant disregard for the law. We are interested in engaging the State’s Attorney to deal with his habitual flaunting of the law.”
Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. also expressed his concerns for the problem that the Taurus Café presents for residents in the Newhaville neighborhood. “Mr. Livingston has demonstrated yet again that he cannot control circumstances on his property and that the Taurus Café presents a threat to the neighborhood,” said DeStefano. “The City will continue to vigorously pursue protecting the neighborhood from Mr. Livingston’s irresponsible behavior.”
